The Physical

You know I am pretty lucky that the affects of carrying such a massive weigh around for so long hasn’t left me with some severe health issues. I’ve had healthy friends struck down with debilitating diseases and others taken from our lives way too early, and yet I walk around oblivious and invincible (seemingly).

I know I’ve been lucky an I don’t want to take the gamble anymore, I want to make sure that as my son gets older I can run around with him, physically challenge him, show him the way forward as a man etc etc. So the time is right.

Over the past few days I’ve strained my back somehow, could have been the table tennis, but it feels like it is getting worse and I just cant get comfortable sitting, standing, walking or even laying down.

When I started SavingAlan I wrote the following list of ailments that I was suffering. I am serious when I say it was difficult getting in and out of the car, get out of my chair in the office, walking more than 100 metres without sitting down to rest and embarrassingly I’d start to huff and puff with minimum exercise. If I recorded any video, you could always hear my breathing in the background. I was in a shocking state.

I can happily report that my health improved very quickly, I can go on 5km walks and really push myself – I almost feel nimble, well as nimble as a 131 kg bloke can be. My skin has improved out of sight and the psoriasis is starting to clear up.

Here’s what I wrote;

Being such a heavy guy brings its own challenges.

Things that most people find simple and easy to achieve become difficult and painful.

So let’s own up to the physical health issues that I currently face;

Sleep Apnea

Psoriasis – Elbows, left knee and various spots.

Achilles Heel – calcification where the tendon meets the heel bone.

Knee – looks like I have strained my right knee, needs to be checked out.

Feet – right foot, split heel and soreness across top.

Back – constant soreness and pain.

Shoulder, right – sore joint, sometimes no strength.

It will be interesting to see how it all develops as I lose the weight. I can already notice the psoriasis clearing up, but still a long way to go.

I’ll update again soon and talk about my blood results, cholesterol and lung functions.

Don’t forget to sponsor me if you haven’t already, if you’re have, don’t forget you’re a bloody legend!

Injury cloud

While I have my share of difficulties, something has just raised its head that could jeopardise my exercise schedule.

On Monday I noticed some soreness in my knee. I’ve never had trouble with my knees before, it’s always been back and ankles. So I am hobbling around like an old man at the moment, concerned that it something serious.

I suppose the options if it is something I have to rest is to do Deep Water Running a few days a week. I think I injured the knee on the exercise bike, by having the seat too low and putting additional pressure on the knee.

I’ll do a Me vs. Temptation update tomorrow, Temptation is still zero.
